I've made lots of progress on the plane, but not many blog updates! I've sanded down the fuselage, cut out the wing opening and fashioned the wing mounts, and covered all of the flying surfaces with Sig Koverall and poly. I also managed to get the fuselage painted and the motor cover attached with located pins and a magnet. If anyone wants details just let me know.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguFT260Uq0x-c6tpzB3LYoWh6o-6c7Lb2ZXKAllY188ZMpw8Rd-aTBC7RlRsho0ifNf4oY3iabnddou_GMdp_nyUjdRI-1yO8WxacK7RZ2BXvIHrw8QrQa-Ayx5VpUmZNrxgFA8Qb2DA5g/s640/blogger-image-1640509783.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Honestly, I think the fuselage is strong enough as it is, but because I only used 1/16" sheeting I didn't want to take the risk of sticking a finger through the side during a hanger incident. <div><br></div><div>I used .5 ozs glass cloth and Zip finishing epoxy. I've got some sanding to do, but all in all I like the result and the fuselage does feel a lot stronger.</div><div><br></div><div>I also managed to get the rudder hinged and temporarily mounted.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVLG41dYJisTPFbyPOTHKMPy3t0h09jI5MwVzcvWP1pvZ8bJP8yOKcLEE5ddqUlI-ISzpnlMm1kCtvVgCVfus1Yw5Db6_Brxeg6k-KjXhz-Qph8rFiBKFxhyljlA1SGs5uHzR-1XpIyt6Y/s640/blogger-image-232253691.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVLG41dYJisTPFbyPOTHKMPy3t0h09jI5MwVzcvWP1pvZ8bJP8yOKcLEE5ddqUlI-ISzpnlMm1kCtvVgCVfus1Yw5Db6_Brxeg6k-KjXhz-Qph8rFiBKFxhyljlA1SGs5uHzR-1XpIyt6Y/s640/blogger-image-232253691.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnVEazewfphQ4Hfri_iEjQwxDd9DgLVzISZQXCKU1DRr-PU8pjQLUbwkBXbfqzDnBAFbtEAnYnaPFM7xt849zS4ucjNDh3e3UrlWLNjTfNuJYaZ3Tk4ysf8ufredEdoyixTrupK7hd4_AJ/s640/blogger-image-1789150408.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnVEazewfphQ4Hfri_iEjQwxDd9DgLVzISZQXCKU1DRr-PU8pjQLUbwkBXbfqzDnBAFbtEAnYnaPFM7xt849zS4ucjNDh3e3UrlWLNjTfNuJYaZ3Tk4ysf8ufredEdoyixTrupK7hd4_AJ/s640/blogger-image-1789150408.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg09uC3YxECC3n_J5Kx5BAmrxdmObt3yf1WDPfhwEnjF0ePau7uzj6JXZDDhYRfTSaPFoiRYPEBBFPzaVNH3llF3zOP8_wLHuoLPzQLm6sGbiBgM8-dePU-f2Y2U3jZLoE916Ce9fE-BHU7/s640/blogger-image--460872509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg09uC3YxECC3n_J5Kx5BAmrxdmObt3yf1WDPfhwEnjF0ePau7uzj6JXZDDhYRfTSaPFoiRYPEBBFPzaVNH3llF3zOP8_wLHuoLPzQLm6sGbiBgM8-dePU-f2Y2U3jZLoE916Ce9fE-BHU7/s640/blogger-image--460872509.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW-MAXUt8VngVn44Mh0IzRp4Y8uGYEX7XBYNZfXVa7pnfPuqxQqzaoh2xQ4vxsdglDYzue13au9WHfA4puSX02X0TdJqw6esE_OTJ5pGpTxrQDZauTeHXNQICg5Atsui9QHNkUuPNDJA3c/s640/blogger-image--884803418.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW-MAXUt8VngVn44Mh0IzRp4Y8uGYEX7XBYNZfXVa7pnfPuqxQqzaoh2xQ4vxsdglDYzue13au9WHfA4puSX02X0TdJqw6esE_OTJ5pGpTxrQDZauTeHXNQICg5Atsui9QHNkUuPNDJA3c/s640/blogger-image--884803418.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div><br></div>Dion9146http://www.blogger.com/profile/02788018008110985174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595354616701544929.post-66946625066697205522015-05-25T22:34:00.001-04:002015-05-25T22:37:21.870-04:00Wheel fairingFor the last bit of the bottom of the fuselage around the wheel, I decided to got with blocks of balsa. The angles and curves were starting to get extreme, so blocks and sandpaper seemed to be easier. It started out looking pretty bad, but like that Ancient Italian guy said, there is a statue waiting to get out of every block of marble - errr, balsa.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje5cpNP20HFhnwEix4YzoFWDowJUhzrmEd5rfLxfY19cr9iGp8My7H8YtwnW5BqI5ChG9eVeh6gK_hDtcefU-E0WLFtVELydRommW-o5zAq1eNVDk8PrEJWrPvGzVHGSZos2hRGrpklT4L/s640/blogger-image-566369815.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Updating this blog without pictures is like eating toast without butter. It just ain't right.<div><br></div><div>The first big milestone was finally removing the fuselage from the crutch. Since I attached the formers to the crutch using hot glue, I just ran a knife down the seem and the parts separated very nicely. But before all of that I took my time figuring out the wing mount location and marked it with pencils and pen on the wood. That way when I cover the fuselage with fiberglass I'll know where the cut lines need to be. I also did the same for the servo access doors in the tail. The easiest way to find the internal bulkheads was to turn the lights out and shine an LED flashlight up under the fuselage. The formers showed through the sheeting and gave me a clear line to trace.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie57Kp7iGAYxvBq6hRUQmFCUub_cujFmyPuaD7iESmviBVMWuAWM7iW5Z4VePO8FG2aKJ8uA63JK1cz5MxnGIsnN6vLBLNaykxv3T5h8OylFiUHtWHm0yBHIxPqvSvBDxu51Kf6gYuJZQq/s640/blogger-image-2130174564.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie57Kp7iGAYxvBq6hRUQmFCUub_cujFmyPuaD7iESmviBVMWuAWM7iW5Z4VePO8FG2aKJ8uA63JK1cz5MxnGIsnN6vLBLNaykxv3T5h8OylFiUHtWHm0yBHIxPqvSvBDxu51Kf6gYuJZQq/s640/blogger-image-2130174564.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSa1bfDLvU9-tc_VB4bJOnBad-s3b3jQcz4ys6o2lnvASLvoRx4ofS-VbXF-3cB8qvxj35AlZKqhkxvDAMwMs8Kv-THHyctG7bCYane2JNm3IyhUExu2B-rUM7ljg9hZjRGzaVWc8tYza/s640/blogger-image-419519311.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSa1bfDLvU9-tc_VB4bJOnBad-s3b3jQcz4ys6o2lnvASLvoRx4ofS-VbXF-3cB8qvxj35AlZKqhkxvDAMwMs8Kv-THHyctG7bCYane2JNm3IyhUExu2B-rUM7ljg9hZjRGzaVWc8tYza/s640/blogger-image-419519311.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I also took some time to make a servo lead extension for the rudder servo. No pics of that, but I did have a little excitement when I was shrinking the heat tube over the connectors with a match and the balsa lit up like it was soaked in gasoline! Luckily I restricted the damage to a small 1/2" x 1" section which was easy to replace.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Then it was time to figure out the main landing gear before starting the bottom sheeting. I used a 2.25" wheel and 3/32" wire to form the main gear. There are two pieces of wire that sandwich together in a brass hub in the wheel. That whole assembly is then attached to the </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">rearmost ply former with hard balsa blocks and epoxy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRS9jnn33LF1sKZjByZEvtMyfZ8aOjy4fEmeu9IZUEyKJ5WD4yWhDrlhg8bPP6XDOp4DSKw5-R1p-SocV3FDXQAFTI0eXBCF__ulsMx1vLTzzRCd1R26Kji1LQ7QKapxiBt58BgROrpsKi/s640/blogger-image-354076650.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRS9jnn33LF1sKZjByZEvtMyfZ8aOjy4fEmeu9IZUEyKJ5WD4yWhDrlhg8bPP6XDOp4DSKw5-R1p-SocV3FDXQAFTI0eXBCF__ulsMx1vLTzzRCd1R26Kji1LQ7QKapxiBt58BgROrpsKi/s640/blogger-image-354076650.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3IX6ScyReOi1_XWEVDq0gnZPxe3V6OnCjF261359wsPvpJrL33GdkCmfBX9IvwKHi7VoSIKx8GFMswz5OE6mnD-5TX7yb9ebJdAnZ3LArLN5wiXfWHte2q9uaOK6780AXSfp8MApMRgcz/s640/blogger-image-1037921677.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3IX6ScyReOi1_XWEVDq0gnZPxe3V6OnCjF261359wsPvpJrL33GdkCmfBX9IvwKHi7VoSIKx8GFMswz5OE6mnD-5TX7yb9ebJdAnZ3LArLN5wiXfWHte2q9uaOK6780AXSfp8MApMRgcz/s640/blogger-image-1037921677.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVxcb-NzpWhA5f2zVfeH2PxkAB3lpq-_zFYdT8BOtB1ZHhQDKSDdLIq7FqXEHd6dpW1v_Wn31KzdsvYxBCX5Ow2Ec6lGM15qoQILgHaGFsKtu7Gs4LefM7hCiZHJYw0QmgYuRGmQzGR4Se/s640/blogger-image--444019218.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVxcb-NzpWhA5f2zVfeH2PxkAB3lpq-_zFYdT8BOtB1ZHhQDKSDdLIq7FqXEHd6dpW1v_Wn31KzdsvYxBCX5Ow2Ec6lGM15qoQILgHaGFsKtu7Gs4LefM7hCiZHJYw0QmgYuRGmQzGR4Se/s640/blogger-image--444019218.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA86auarWR07fKxlZp9EM7I2uapkt9CYK26UcXu-RcHrAXNYr9n6ufYt_uExbtRe3Z8GcPaDJkcsSvLpK5fvT6y-LAUt8q3x9GjOTIJex8oqu-m5AaU4xkbQMFAdFgQc9IfUkRJjx-nBoK/s640/blogger-image--2131229472.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA86auarWR07fKxlZp9EM7I2uapkt9CYK26UcXu-RcHrAXNYr9n6ufYt_uExbtRe3Z8GcPaDJkcsSvLpK5fvT6y-LAUt8q3x9GjOTIJex8oqu-m5AaU4xkbQMFAdFgQc9IfUkRJjx-nBoK/s640/blogger-image--2131229472.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">You can also see that I started installing the bottom backbone made from 1/8" bass. There is only one way to cover this beast, and that's with patience, strip balsa, glue, and a hot iron. Just like with the gull wing, I used the hot iron method to strip plank the fuselage. <div><br></div><div>I had to remove some of the crutches to get to the under side of the fuselage for the first strip. I used a couple of large strips of balsa where they could handle the compound curves, but I had to gradually reduce my strip width down to about 1/4" towards the top.</div><div><br></div><div>I also got the fin covered including using some filler balsa at the base near the fuselage joint. </div><div><br></div><div>The whole mess looks a bit ugly right now, but that's OK. It will get a good sanding then I will remove it from the remaining crutches and finish the bottom side. As always it was a fun event right up until the lights went out. Not sure what happened, but emergency power kicked on which meant we only had about 25% of normal light. Tough to see small model stuff like that, but oh well.<div><br></div><div>My total excitement for the day came when I finally signed up for the Society of Antique Modelers (SAM). A couple of major steps needed to be taken to start to get a real feeling of accomplishment. First, the center wing halves were attached by sandwiching the 2 spars with pieces of 1/8" ply, and creating a flat base for the leading edge to tie into. Each 'tip' is 6.5" off of the table.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfLHUJNeIe-af18W4TPTQjDFPJCL_SQMrsgD7k_yKcLk33hInYcTylqRduTQGbs7s6s3F1Fk5hjyJClhpAtDDLJ4ly19zJdGo9GM6kUA6ExOEhswAdsApYFkHUI7fQWlNByhd4iwZiV38o/s640/blogger-image-1312608073.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfLHUJNeIe-af18W4TPTQjDFPJCL_SQMrsgD7k_yKcLk33hInYcTylqRduTQGbs7s6s3F1Fk5hjyJClhpAtDDLJ4ly19zJdGo9GM6kUA6ExOEhswAdsApYFkHUI7fQWlNByhd4iwZiV38o/s640/blogger-image-1312608073.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5PfOWoE5zKqM0i78-GYoSpCznLV5JXDsstJ3Uq1FTn_y11xCyFh-RRQlT92kIbnTD5f5y8M59gmYOgsrf6XZOHcsADnd0i9PpCr14jotyeIUObFjpReejzSIFH2RTdybq5-zgOB9BMqVY/s640/blogger-image--1047329418.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5PfOWoE5zKqM0i78-GYoSpCznLV5JXDsstJ3Uq1FTn_y11xCyFh-RRQlT92kIbnTD5f5y8M59gmYOgsrf6XZOHcsADnd0i9PpCr14jotyeIUObFjpReejzSIFH2RTdybq5-zgOB9BMqVY/s640/blogger-image--1047329418.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Next came the leading edge sheeting. I was looking forward to this because I knew it wouldn't be easy with the compound curves and had already decided to use a planking method similar to the way I have built boats. So one by one I measured, cut, fitted, measured, cut, rinsed and repeated multiple times until I got both side done. They turned out great, but look worse than they are. Using the hot iron method it tends to instantly dry any surface glue that may be on the wood, so you can get the dried glue marks. These are not big globs of dried glue, and you can barely feel it when running your hands over the wood. A light sanding, and the top LE sheeting is good to go. I also completed the bottom of the LE sheeting using a single piece, but no pics of that yet. The top and bottom added significance stiffness to the structure!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoo4ovbW9ozQ6EWOn1khAsxguF1Lpsj1ZFM-RDUVpDJut-apOk2epBIn6bdK0vvAKwsXW0vHXhfy5c-qJTHmGfGJz-nMmwOtjtYP4Jcl7S_LAlq5l5jwZEbwAh7pj_bNCzI6sfe_sJ-TGi/s640/blogger-image-1755096870.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I had already decided on a bell crank style with a center pivot, but I'm a visual person and wanted to be able to hold the stab up to the fuselage while building the pivot point. Again, this plane has no instructions and the plans don't have this laid out, so it's design as you go and it was time to start the stab.<div><br></div><div>This thing seemed a little overly complex / engineered, but I'll chalk it up to the journey that counts. I could have built a simpler version with the same shape, but chose to stick with the 'stock' method as much as possible. It's basically a 3 spar system of hard 1/8" tapered balsa with the 1/16" x 1/8" rib strips. Then the entire subframe was wrapped in the top and bottom sheeting and rib caps added to round it out. It does produce a very stiff and lightweight stab, and these stabs are as big as some of the wings on my park fliers!</div><div><br></div><div>First, I created a pattern of the stab sheeting using file folder card stock. Then I transferred the pattern onto 1/16" x 4" sheets of lightweight balsa. It turns out the 3 pieces make up each half, so I had to join them together to make one connected sheet for each stab half. I use the method of a covering iron turned all the way up to superheat the Titebond glue and cure it extra fast. I also use this method to attach sheeting to wings and things. Then I use a piece of ceramic tile as my surface because the glue won't stick to it, and the heat of the iron won't affect it.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBpF6zX3cwUf0kjweG2WcMMpDpYOUoNHYHNzTrNveAqbNhqQa6-x5Z7w93RtCAzfdYu4T-9uaeU0GsgdGx_TB_sO-Z45OW8FtnvGWpU-Bqz7J5jMPUcUbUqeadveY5sYvhz5AqG2Ave9K3/s640/blogger-image--1118493422.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBpF6zX3cwUf0kjweG2WcMMpDpYOUoNHYHNzTrNveAqbNhqQa6-x5Z7w93RtCAzfdYu4T-9uaeU0GsgdGx_TB_sO-Z45OW8FtnvGWpU-Bqz7J5jMPUcUbUqeadveY5sYvhz5AqG2Ave9K3/s640/blogger-image--1118493422.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>I used the surgical rubber method of attaching the pivot connector to each stab half. The pivot rod is a piece of hollow carbon fiber rod that slightly presses up against the surgical tubing which has been glued to a hard piece of balsa on the center spar. This grips the rod and holds the stab tight. Worked well on my Genie, and should work fine here too.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHMwD1v5-fzkVZjLna4eK8T_lGXUc2BuzuHuGZXMQbxvL50M8e9ogJAhkhZJVucOj0aGlSpThlQuc2Q_1x6F_eDidk5DrsWHur1nz0P1Mh3pksUV2eoogJX7799pDyNeUamAcvtGXyFHG/s640/blogger-image--1306753333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHMwD1v5-fzkVZjLna4eK8T_lGXUc2BuzuHuGZXMQbxvL50M8e9ogJAhkhZJVucOj0aGlSpThlQuc2Q_1x6F_eDidk5DrsWHur1nz0P1Mh3pksUV2eoogJX7799pDyNeUamAcvtGXyFHG/s640/blogger-image--1306753333.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-xOETQ2swd5v_SsnLy2P7W8BuZQ-b04pljltk92SavWxQuNte0n7CiuxCEJG6SsUU3hAsT-kfIclVOsVu8OyeXfL4lFMqiHzLzW6i54lcIV3xm2qr2pn8Gq7ki5zORj8JRCc2wvXilf6n/s640/blogger-image-1626870294.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-xOETQ2swd5v_SsnLy2P7W8BuZQ-b04pljltk92SavWxQuNte0n7CiuxCEJG6SsUU3hAsT-kfIclVOsVu8OyeXfL4lFMqiHzLzW6i54lcIV3xm2qr2pn8Gq7ki5zORj8JRCc2wvXilf6n/s640/blogger-image-1626870294.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWfQLArc1HedcsQQzVztweE4rcJN5E-fmQ14I5PovP7IRlKQwewumQWcpk27TnSyWnELbGXGlIIGPeNH-1QLxFg-g5Oj-7CgcS4fV7Rspi0kGs1zgVnTkU0jeLwGTe6V0KIjlBpJKbSd1F/s640/blogger-image--1727408918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWfQLArc1HedcsQQzVztweE4rcJN5E-fmQ14I5PovP7IRlKQwewumQWcpk27TnSyWnELbGXGlIIGPeNH-1QLxFg-g5Oj-7CgcS4fV7Rspi0kGs1zgVnTkU0jeLwGTe6V0KIjlBpJKbSd1F/s640/blogger-image--1727408918.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIeOFv1JrqyKoaVLhvXo2IeelYqhSs3oV-Xz5w_vUl7_CzgzNYrhlgE5jufrQcsAUXyABOjAdzMo3jycPguLU4lHPsjnrp344Bjfz1FL3o3MbLEWqzDt2klfiXzN-k6903eWaBHdoxWYQU/s640/blogger-image-59273039.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIeOFv1JrqyKoaVLhvXo2IeelYqhSs3oV-Xz5w_vUl7_CzgzNYrhlgE5jufrQcsAUXyABOjAdzMo3jycPguLU4lHPsjnrp344Bjfz1FL3o3MbLEWqzDt2klfiXzN-k6903eWaBHdoxWYQU/s640/blogger-image-59273039.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div>Next, the sheeting was attached using the hot iron glue method.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyUeIvYC7urKol2lBf7YOjIfPBe7H24jvMnHagOBHDKR4M3Ic6q1EoDm0wfhXrruxcscXuADd65QNaif66mz6eOQ58MSzXwMbcrjv_6MXBzHyjHcJXc-08OLkDVFPEYMgeGmrEEx-A3jiH/s640/blogger-image-2139475446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyUeIvYC7urKol2lBf7YOjIfPBe7H24jvMnHagOBHDKR4M3Ic6q1EoDm0wfhXrruxcscXuADd65QNaif66mz6eOQ58MSzXwMbcrjv_6MXBzHyjHcJXc-08OLkDVFPEYMgeGmrEEx-A3jiH/s640/blogger-image-2139475446.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3tn68OXQ9B_1dl0Y3jrl9tAPQNF5lNFFAaMabo1kT3duN8sooko_OwlSU_sGbidakgtfQ5QiUGm1OjuRyi_wF5baY5mqnWLqe5l2PKyoe-NTx58yzKIz6VnJmjvK9nHffBAEqtn9pY2nh/s640/blogger-image-1401210174.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3tn68OXQ9B_1dl0Y3jrl9tAPQNF5lNFFAaMabo1kT3duN8sooko_OwlSU_sGbidakgtfQ5QiUGm1OjuRyi_wF5baY5mqnWLqe5l2PKyoe-NTx58yzKIz6VnJmjvK9nHffBAEqtn9pY2nh/s640/blogger-image-1401210174.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And then I could get started on the control mechanism. No real surprises here. It was just a little thicker and swoopier than normal. I was now far enough on the wings that I needed to create something new, so the fuselage was up next.<div><br></div><div>There are a number of ways that I could have built the fuselage, but I chose the crutch method mainly because I've always wanted to build a fuselage like this, and what better time than now. Besides, there are no instructions to tell me that I'm doing it right or wrong, so the crutch method it was.</div><div><br></div><div>The first thing I did was lay the plan out on my drywall board and mark the former locations with a finishing nail. By nailing down through the plan and numbering the marks, I could remove the plan and lay it out for reference without covering it up. In this case, I taped it to the door of my workshop.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcU8-q0OP7BbEIqjMdo_oTwJAszfKo4SGFjtIPKSGZLoq9qI-doY42Qjv7TgROt9iRJPSy2XpqZQ2k_s1tp6YT0JYGRIb53icfi8_6Zc9ZWb6sXj6rfAq7yX7_A79HCWaDpkfGWYF4e2xt/s640/blogger-image-139587152.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcU8-q0OP7BbEIqjMdo_oTwJAszfKo4SGFjtIPKSGZLoq9qI-doY42Qjv7TgROt9iRJPSy2XpqZQ2k_s1tp6YT0JYGRIb53icfi8_6Zc9ZWb6sXj6rfAq7yX7_A79HCWaDpkfGWYF4e2xt/s640/blogger-image-139587152.jpg"></a></span><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRgcsrLU74TzYUtfbSkb-WoeDPoksHZdiqemcYz39ip11XT88ir2dc9SmtO3Wefzb3e-SM6IQrBI_qUlmdJx9eh2qUf3gyaBOnPCtap80SJ5aLUxMf320TCgZxawbyuhj5USbXN0n1NTsC/s640/blogger-image--1085796462.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRgcsrLU74TzYUtfbSkb-WoeDPoksHZdiqemcYz39ip11XT88ir2dc9SmtO3Wefzb3e-SM6IQrBI_qUlmdJx9eh2qUf3gyaBOnPCtap80SJ5aLUxMf320TCgZxawbyuhj5USbXN0n1NTsC/s640/blogger-image--1085796462.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vo32Ib40v0fy0un8SeOCmULapuSUvmSACbgnMXAwSw8ak_1BM3YWm1Frlj-Q4fViugEkGgSAk8qGJbMGgjqEBrvgxrerZSV0TJqmfM4UpIoCMMxEKa3aDrfPftKYuzBsY0V3bhlKQUM5/s640/blogger-image-1303194527.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vo32Ib40v0fy0un8SeOCmULapuSUvmSACbgnMXAwSw8ak_1BM3YWm1Frlj-Q4fViugEkGgSAk8qGJbMGgjqEBrvgxrerZSV0TJqmfM4UpIoCMMxEKa3aDrfPftKYuzBsY0V3bhlKQUM5/s640/blogger-image-1303194527.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; clear: both;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcU8-q0OP7BbEIqjMdo_oTwJAszfKo4SGFjtIPKSGZLoq9qI-doY42Qjv7TgROt9iRJPSy2XpqZQ2k_s1tp6YT0JYGRIb53icfi8_6Zc9ZWb6sXj6rfAq7yX7_A79HCWaDpkfGWYF4e2xt/s640/blogger-image-139587152.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsM-i7TwO5zSyCdy9LWSlholnXP78EW9oJ7nsWnDDobILzxPtFYu3dZE2DG2DUowGod4wuaTZdBDSjHFIGkSnV9IG2dvGJswB5e2c5vQYWDteF1vgGC9sPbpSjO7QAy_X1xgNWwciVRdKu/s640/blogger-image--657629281.jpg"></a></span></div><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; clear: both;">After getting the formers marked on the board, I needed to build the crutch system. When she went away, it was just the main gull frames and the wing tips. One of the reasons the plane was put away was distractions from other project and life itself, but another reason was that one of the tips had developed some really bad war page in the leading edge. I can't explain it, and I couldn't undo it, so it put it away for a while (like 2 years....).<div><br></div><div>However, after building a number of other models and getting frustrated as my hobby progressed into more sophisticated and complicated controls, I started missing the simplicity of the old timer and good old 3 channel controls. So the Gull was brought back out.</div><div><br></div><div>The first thing I did was take another look at the wing tip. I stripped the sheeting off and tried to get to a point where I. Ight be able to repair the warp, but unfortunately the sheeting was attached too good and I ended up breaking a number of ribs. So the decision was made to ditch the wing and start over with a new tip.</div><div><br></div><div>It was quickly rebuilt over a weekend, and I was re-energized again!<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyXXdWda9PeJukA3iCC70afxluHVrQECMy9NtSYBkAll8kf2rTJELxi1m68gNorYniYJlp6ayqkUPp07A3PJMWsYZ3F7fgrBVZj1ZMwqq5tW6-KhRAyfC0lrqu0bmESGoiZ6qGoX76i1Rd/s640/blogger-image--752092947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyXXdWda9PeJukA3iCC70afxluHVrQECMy9NtSYBkAll8kf2rTJELxi1m68gNorYniYJlp6ayqkUPp07A3PJMWsYZ3F7fgrBVZj1ZMwqq5tW6-KhRAyfC0lrqu0bmESGoiZ6qGoX76i1Rd/s640/blogger-image--752092947.jpg"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyXXdWda9PeJukA3iCC70afxluHVrQECMy9NtSYBkAll8kf2rTJELxi1m68gNorYniYJlp6ayqkUPp07A3PJMWsYZ3F7fgrBVZj1ZMwqq5tW6-KhRAyfC0lrqu0bmESGoiZ6qGoX76i1Rd/s640/blogger-image--752092947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYtq0gBqTZpewq0HxFFFM5iByQVwSmUvo__0T8rYCjM-UbCxLi3Pi3u4HVschJNzeD2meLlx7dldvnCUWluIaYXJ4jy3cwqyzvC2g-yLq9s7y4aoLYSSPhowgvc-zdElb4DBNNofxSa471/s640/blogger-image-2059050229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYtq0gBqTZpewq0HxFFFM5iByQVwSmUvo__0T8rYCjM-UbCxLi3Pi3u4HVschJNzeD2meLlx7dldvnCUWluIaYXJ4jy3cwqyzvC2g-yLq9s7y4aoLYSSPhowgvc-zdElb4DBNNofxSa471/s640/blogger-image-2059050229.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSKY3lsRFAcNVUGbrx3NLjF0KKv3elyFaG3cjI5TQ2KmmIfdaC0mq0Gva2fS2kKr1hqYSWOyiWoEL77A7LJiibmNR8jHmjDqHFfuWLQtj4JFKZLrDitVNH1sHNQaJ9HsIHP69VTXOtKH7z/s640/blogger-image-874924890.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSKY3lsRFAcNVUGbrx3NLjF0KKv3elyFaG3cjI5TQ2KmmIfdaC0mq0Gva2fS2kKr1hqYSWOyiWoEL77A7LJiibmNR8jHmjDqHFfuWLQtj4JFKZLrDitVNH1sHNQaJ9HsIHP69VTXOtKH7z/s640/blogger-image-874924890.jpg"></a></div></div></div><div><br></div>Dion9146http://www.blogger.com/profile/02788018008110985174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595354616701544929.post-83602659915159304292014-01-06T21:47:00.001-05:002014-01-06T21:47:30.072-05:00Well, this build is going to be on hold for a while. I'm pretty much ready to apply paint, but I don't have an indoor paint booth. Just like the rest of the Country, it's a bit too cold to paint anything in the garage.<br />
<br />
So, wait we shall and I'll try to get some other projects updated!<br />

I ran out of Koverall and couldn't get to the hobby shop until just before Christmas. But now the wings are done, and everything has two coats of poly. Next comes primer and paint, then I can start assembly and setup.<br />
<br />
I need to get this plane off of the bench because my 8 year old girl just got her first RC airplane. It's a small span glider from Mountain Models, and of course we need to build it!<br />

I forgot how much fun this stuff is, and I really like the fabric-like look that it gives the plane. It's probably a little heavier than if I used Litespan, but I had a bunch leftover from years ago so I decided to use it again.<div><br></div><div>For the adhesive, I used a mixture of water and Modge Podge. My wife has a well stocked craft room, and has a new bottle of the stuff. It's basically thinner white glue, and I read somewhere on RCG that it can be used instead of Stix-it or other model specific adhesive. I made a test frame, and it seemed to work pretty well so I went ahead and started coating the frame with it. Well, I got it too thinned out the first time, so I had to apply another coat for he Koverall to stick properly.</div><div><br></div><div>I've made a couple of re-learning mistakes on things like seams and overlaps, but so far I'm happy with it. I have also applied one coat of water based poly with a brush to seal it, and will apply the second coat with the spray can poly. So far I'm pretty happy with the turnout, but now I need to order more Koverall to keep the ball rolling!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL4j48AMbPlJ4wCfPQWrg5al7Wu4cRB3j82FtPjjpwVrh5d6Gj_WzAyXThwIrjqjbeiXl-0ZowKViyz2C7X6H_JftBPF8UTtMxV_Uvb2EeduHjsEjPCr43P4sCyGSheMaNtvhjjwgCTLvI/s640/blogger-image--205088086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL4j48AMbPlJ4wCfPQWrg5al7Wu4cRB3j82FtPjjpwVrh5d6Gj_WzAyXThwIrjqjbeiXl-0ZowKViyz2C7X6H_JftBPF8UTtMxV_Uvb2EeduHjsEjPCr43P4sCyGSheMaNtvhjjwgCTLvI/s640/blogger-image--205088086.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTTXb_dRpabxUfC1PRLWH44WWBqRM33-MOH9FYMqxEfSbxHm_5ECnENLbPc_vq-Zi3CBMxU8WcM6xmQdZdOxyyOhv0vaF0FEFp0dEvsW-rPuJW_ZdtCSC6BdRvrnN_-coeLlHjauG2kqEF/s640/blogger-image-2007537501.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTTXb_dRpabxUfC1PRLWH44WWBqRM33-MOH9FYMqxEfSbxHm_5ECnENLbPc_vq-Zi3CBMxU8WcM6xmQdZdOxyyOhv0vaF0FEFp0dEvsW-rPuJW_ZdtCSC6BdRvrnN_-coeLlHjauG2kqEF/s640/blogger-image-2007537501.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl3pqN2VzCOmbIgkg3obn1Q01W99ZIhoGdllIIbD3q7OYfcokjU29oUJ8W8-8nZw2ysgCxi3LUWI1TRs2IlRXfnztQphHZ63lhNN4oTGXbJCMcdm8C5j7wm5EGd4iXbo1kbjHY6XNfkgOo/s640/blogger-image-709299860.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl3pqN2VzCOmbIgkg3obn1Q01W99ZIhoGdllIIbD3q7OYfcokjU29oUJ8W8-8nZw2ysgCxi3LUWI1TRs2IlRXfnztQphHZ63lhNN4oTGXbJCMcdm8C5j7wm5EGd4iXbo1kbjHY6XNfkgOo/s640/blogger-image-709299860.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div>Dion9146http://www.blogger.com/profile/02788018008110985174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595354616701544929.post-24562102066074548222013-11-17T21:41:00.001-05:002013-11-17T21:41:19.775-05:00A little more rigging progressI managed to get some build time in today as it rained most of the day. I focused my efforts on mocking up the airframe with rigging to make sure I had all of the rigging anchors correct. Speaking of anchors, I made mine out of pieces of sewing hooks. I cut them apart to get the loop end, then anchored them with CA glue. Then I used black sewing thread to mock up the start of the rigging.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFcSx3dEGX9GZPRyQ6Gw6ig3pu9ik9tQCj7HHeStBe5U0ymnFbKmIMftpV7TB1inNo5pMGEck5IngXYrWcPJ3qJNvAk3UfiWDCa3DSPSKw-s2HiCqWO1ij_62gb-s0x86L4kDZTIMSZnyw/s640/blogger-image-802973755.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFcSx3dEGX9GZPRyQ6Gw6ig3pu9ik9tQCj7HHeStBe5U0ymnFbKmIMftpV7TB1inNo5pMGEck5IngXYrWcPJ3qJNvAk3UfiWDCa3DSPSKw-s2HiCqWO1ij_62gb-s0x86L4kDZTIMSZnyw/s640/blogger-image-802973755.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div>Dion9146http://www.blogger.com/profile/02788018008110985174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595354616701544929.post-46126804610765878122013-11-10T22:07:00.001-05:002013-11-12T22:51:34.491-05:00Radio dayToday I got my mind set on installing some electronics, and I managed to do just that. As you can see, I fabricated a servo mount because I don't like gluing in servos, and we also got the fuselage servos and controls mounted. Yes, that is a a piece of aluminum soda can used as the servo strap. I decided to put it shiney side up instead of advertising for Diet Coke. <div><br></div><div>Satisfied, I went for a 30 mile bike ride. :)<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTmYm8QLhtFAHtkQIrZxCbeHMSEKuB-wEjUylMiEnX51l3DPsOb5A3MxxvB01h-Vh9s8Pid4grIlvBuwazdOHv7YIAsNAWe_yAd_moLsFST5i_OBDo5HbzAYjA__066_TlJG_2TL03tpYh/s640/blogger-image-1177408986.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTmYm8QLhtFAHtkQIrZxCbeHMSEKuB-wEjUylMiEnX51l3DPsOb5A3MxxvB01h-Vh9s8Pid4grIlvBuwazdOHv7YIAsNAWe_yAd_moLsFST5i_OBDo5HbzAYjA__066_TlJG_2TL03tpYh/s640/blogger-image-1177408986.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP8ZDmkldSWiP7joR2N0l-jAKgrVDFuL9ENRmwBLxYSNnkladMp7dOj4EQeoOJBwMgjmNlzXUCamux9IuqPy4493ADifHn9Jqkd42-okCGyY4Qcfwxu4hugelruzlUWxNzB4nUNr_9CQxP/s640/blogger-image-1581123243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP8ZDmkldSWiP7joR2N0l-jAKgrVDFuL9ENRmwBLxYSNnkladMp7dOj4EQeoOJBwMgjmNlzXUCamux9IuqPy4493ADifHn9Jqkd42-okCGyY4Qcfwxu4hugelruzlUWxNzB4nUNr_9CQxP/s640/blogger-image-1581123243.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCDtGMWMsH-CRPlAr3TgLteHiMiv0l1JeeZiXR0gIvvW1quGNmmRh7QLJyWvOF7vpRCHyqlLN2642wctHkUTuRCUua0SUsITjgRWV_V01IR9vfoGLZCl4sioVwvLhek9793GgvqLS4iZ8y/s640/blogger-image--1079756771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCDtGMWMsH-CRPlAr3TgLteHiMiv0l1JeeZiXR0gIvvW1quGNmmRh7QLJyWvOF7vpRCHyqlLN2642wctHkUTuRCUua0SUsITjgRWV_V01IR9vfoGLZCl4sioVwvLhek9793GgvqLS4iZ8y/s640/blogger-image--1079756771.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWPv5j4lMN5dOVGgcebgk8k7zV-oACCE2SFMdW7sn3ebeVF2VYE4P04DQaQtF5YKREIH3hVmhKjF-mYazbxdBFlcI1GXq15ad5DK-bGzQKg-h1a_niAOTr65_Pvt_ng1SfjuuFPI10QjPR/s640/blogger-image--1449987280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWPv5j4lMN5dOVGgcebgk8k7zV-oACCE2SFMdW7sn3ebeVF2VYE4P04DQaQtF5YKREIH3hVmhKjF-mYazbxdBFlcI1GXq15ad5DK-bGzQKg-h1a_niAOTr65_Pvt_ng1SfjuuFPI10QjPR/s640/blogger-image--1449987280.jpg"></a></div><br></div></div>Dion9146http://www.blogger.com/profile/02788018008110985174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595354616701544929.post-67852927872842938472013-11-08T20:09:00.001-05:002013-11-08T20:09:52.801-05:00Starting to look like an airplane!I'm at that stage now where I'm putting it together and taking it apart just to see it in the bones. I've been struggling with over-analyzing the rigging and trying to make sure I don't miss anything as I work through each step. Being my first bi-plane, I want to make sure it looks good but not overdue it at the same time. <div><br></div><div>I managed to get past the mental hump this past weekend and started on the rigging details on each wing. Still slow progress as I still get time to fly my sailplanes on nice days, but I finally feel like I'm making some good progress. I even managed to get the landing gear soldered up tonight.</div><div><br><div><br></div></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjzBTbHdMHbv81Oo2nY8qwLVYNCPRDRQPT_HZNBu-fAxrZsfzT_d-QIGU8mCF3gAx9cFE4E2hqTl1d4fg6VW5BcMTBFAq6UEa14PdVqvB2ZeG3bIR98vVANzWjZZre9evTuXchA2R01LrW/s640/blogger-image--872195046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjzBTbHdMHbv81Oo2nY8qwLVYNCPRDRQPT_HZNBu-fAxrZsfzT_d-QIGU8mCF3gAx9cFE4E2hqTl1d4fg6VW5BcMTBFAq6UEa14PdVqvB2ZeG3bIR98vVANzWjZZre9evTuXchA2R01LrW/s640/blogger-image--872195046.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzMkoKBHwg0ZkgeVXh_wgZqJbOHlh6EYjYNvR6WaCuoXus-HlW5t29Ugq1qJN1p537Q5JVpMN1JDTF1nMZnHPdnUnsgFnjEZTwYhtXXK6Mz0Cdq95Yj-T1pRY1nNma9FXWmKRqxZI6a3uw/s640/blogger-image--1872820597.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzMkoKBHwg0ZkgeVXh_wgZqJbOHlh6EYjYNvR6WaCuoXus-HlW5t29Ugq1qJN1p537Q5JVpMN1JDTF1nMZnHPdnUnsgFnjEZTwYhtXXK6Mz0Cdq95Yj-T1pRY1nNma9FXWmKRqxZI6a3uw/s640/blogger-image--1872820597.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuaODDxjmSb8xrx_OlbQoicjhFBJa4zxBnhgY_6JsI0hONj5u_H3Srj-cGNOUPHFcLXVtpJwAlYcpRV2LOk54V7NfuLx-i592oaV3naav-5nnnrpua9B3aqxdLc177huE1LZNmvmgUcmVG/s640/blogger-image--786978335.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuaODDxjmSb8xrx_OlbQoicjhFBJa4zxBnhgY_6JsI0hONj5u_H3Srj-cGNOUPHFcLXVtpJwAlYcpRV2LOk54V7NfuLx-i592oaV3naav-5nnnrpua9B3aqxdLc177huE1LZNmvmgUcmVG/s640/blogger-image--786978335.jpg"></a></div>Dion9146http://www.blogger.com/profile/02788018008110985174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1595354616701544929.post-22534444465951118042013-10-16T09:17:00.000-04:002013-10-16T09:17:03.167-04:00She has a heart!Got the motor mounted last night. It's an old Electrifly Ammo with a gear box on it that came out of an old foamie Great Planes F6F Hellcat warbird. I think they were also used in the Corsairs of the same make. Not sure if it the perfect motor for this plane, but weight wise both planes are similar and this combination on a 3s battery pulled the Hellcat around the skies like it was on rails. I should have plenty of power with this little thing, and there is still more than enough room for a 2500 3s battery. Besides, I had it sitting around and free is always good.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As you can see, I mounted the firewall then cut carbon fiber standoffs so I could set the down and side thrust. Worked out perfectly.</div>

This build is a bit slower than usual mainly because it's my first bi-plane and first scale subject with this much 'potential' detail. I've been methodical in my approach - sort of a glue one piece, research the next 10 pieces, then glue another piece. I've already made some minor mistakes, and I'm still scratching my head on a few other decisions, but the more I look at it the more I figure it out. Doing lots of research on other WWI builds out on the Net also helps.<br />
<br />
I'm getting to the point of deciding what to cover it with. I'm leaning towards Sig Koverall. Although it may be overkill and a little on the heavy side for this airframe, I like the toughness of it over thinner tissue like coverings mainly due to my flying location. Tall grasses and weeds have been known to put a whole in my Monokote covering on one of my gliders, so I want to make sure it's tough. Plus, I just like the look of Koverall and I already have some in stock!<br />

I started out by sneaking away with a 2nd place in our monthly 2 channel club contest. It's the best showing I have had in a long time, and not bad considering I fly my plane once a month. The conditions were challenging at times, but best of all I managed 4 out if 5 landings in the points. Not too shabby for a plane with no landing control. My plane is the yellow and white Sagitta 900. Ed Wilson's winning SD100 is in the foreground. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">After getting home and doing some yard work, I managed to also get some build time on the BE12a.
